The school library smelled of rain and old paper. Maja was eleven years old and having thirteen thoughts at once. Today she was supposed to speak in front of the class about courage, but her hands were trembling. Her stomach was like a tight knot that refused to untangle itself. She was looking for silence between the bookcases when she saw a small wooden box. On the lid someone had burned a word: "Feelings", clear and dark. The box was lying on a shelf that she had not noticed here at all before. Maja touched the lid and felt warm, as if someone had quietly blown. Inside, something trembled, like a heart to the rhythm of her breathing. The dial on the side had colours and simple, short inscriptions. On the dial were the words: "Fear", "Anger", "Sadness", "Calm", "Joy". The little arrow moved and immediately stood next to 'Fear'. A quiet whisper came from the box: "Name it, please." Maja whispered: "I'm afraid I'll forget all the words." Suddenly, behind her back, Leon from the parallel class grunted quietly. "Did you run away from maths too?" he asked in a shy half-hearted voice today. Maja nodded and wordlessly showed him her find. Leon touched the box and the arrow jumped straight to 'Curiosity'. The box lightly pulled them towards the exit door. "It leads," Leon said and laughed uncertainly. The corridor was empty and slippery from wet footprints. A shadow walked in front of them, as if drawn with light on the floor. They stopped by an old music room, long since locked. A box chimed a short note and from inside it slid out a tiny key. Maja squeezed it, feeling a swirl and warmth in her belly. The arrow ran between "Fear" and "Courage", she couldn't decide. A quiet chord sounded behind the door, like a greeting. "If you open it, it's yours," whispered the box quietly. The lock flicked, the key popped into the hole by itself, and the handle vibrated....
