Directory of Night Readers
My name is Charles and I like the school library after hours. Today my cousin Maja and I stayed in to finish the competition poster. The lady librarian left the key and muttered that we should lock up. The rain tapped on the windowsill and the fluorescent lights buzzed like irritated wasps. The school was empty, echoing every whisper between the bookcases. The clock above the counter showed eighteen forty-two and was stubbornly loud.
Suddenly, something rustled in the slot of the return slot and the metal clanked. I pulled out a thin book in grey cloth, quite alien to the library. On the cover someone had inscribed: Directory of Night Readers, the letters shone with fresh ink. We opened it and saw two lines with today's date and time. It stood there: Charles and Maja, 7pm, North Entrance, warehouse. Maja hissed: - Who knows we're here, and why? I wanted to pretend it was a joke, but it smelled of wet leaves. A draught moved the tabs, as if someone was passing through, though no one was there. We took the torch from the desk and went down the corridor to the cellars.
The storeroom door had a moon painted on it and a yellow light blinked next to it. The key rasped in the lock, but when I pushed, the sash gave way on its own. Inside, shelves formed narrow lanes and the dust smelled of chalk. At exactly nine o'clock a small bell sounded, although there was no clock. Somewhere further on a page flipped and something went off, as if sighing. A narrow streak of light flashed on the floor, hidden behind the last bookcase. We approached slowly, and the heavy bookcase began to move away of its own accord. Something metal flashed in the gap and someone whispered: - You made it in time.
