June was coming to an end, and the promise of summer adventures hung in the air. Zosia could not fall asleep - that night the forest beyond the village seemed more alive than usual. She felt as if someone was calling her through the ajar window. As the moon hung high, she got up quietly and slipped out of the house. Julek was already waiting on the veranda. "I knew you wouldn't last," he whispered, smiling wistfully. Their grandmother, who knew hundreds of Slavic stories, repeated every year that only on the Kupala Night does the Fern Flower bloom and that whoever finds it will hear the voice of the ancient spirits. Zosia and Julek were ready to risk everything to find out if this was true. They walked into the cool, mysterious shadows of the old forest. The mulch was soft with moss, and the air smelled of needles and wet earth. Somewhere deep an owl hooted. They tore through ferns that looked like the green fans of a giant at night. At one point, the wind trembled and a light twinkled between the trees, like a dancing fire. - Julek! Can you see it? - Zosia grabbed her brother's hand. - 'I think there's someone there...' - Julek swallowed his saliva. They followed the light, which once disappeared, once appeared right in front of them. The further they walked, the more the forest changed - the trees leaned over them, and ancient stones with strange markings grew among the grasses. Suddenly a thick mist surrounded them, and the silence was broken by a quiet whisper. "Welcome, daredevils... Are you looking for a flower that only blooms once a year?
