In the heart of the Great Forest, where the tall pines rustle quietly even on windless afternoons and the sun plays between the leaves, lived an extraordinary bunch of animals. The tiny hedgehog Julek, the clever squirrel Tosia, the owl Janek and the chatty mouse Blanka were the best of friends and formed the greatest forest orchestra ever heard. Every year, just before the summer solstice, the entire clearing was transformed into a stage. Even animals from distant corners of the forest came to the concert. Bouquets of flowers adorned the trees and skylights prepared the brightest illumination. This time, however, the concert was to be special. Tosia had added a new and unique note to the score - apparently her melody could make even the most gloomy fox start to twitch to the rhythm of the music. The day before the concert, Tosia carefully sealed the note in a jar and twisted the lid, hiding it under the root of an old oak tree. - Tomorrow, before the performance, I will show it to everyone! - she whispered exultantly. The next morning, the clearing resounded with laughter and the sounds of the orchestra rehearsing. The hedgehog Julek was practising playing the chestnut castanets, Blanka was checking if her tail resonated enough with the sound of the bells, and Janek was warming up his wings before a solo number. - Tosiu, show us that new note! - asked Julek, spinning in circles with impatience. Tosia ran to the oak tree, knelt by the root, pushed back the soft moss... and suddenly froze. The jar was empty. Her friends gathered around her, their faces expressing increasing surprise. - Maybe one of us took it by accident? - Blanka asked, but they all just shook their heads. The owl Janek thought deeply and after a moment said: - Look! Footprints... Small drops of glistening dew trailed deep into the forest. Everyone looked in the direction where the footprints led under the dense ferns. The thicket looked as inviting as it was frightening. Julek tightened his paws on his castanets, Tosia tucked her dishevelled kitty behind her ear, and Janek raised one wing as if ready to shield his friends. Just then, a quiet, strange buzzing came from the ferns. The friends looked at each other with wide-open eyes. Had someone stolen the note? Or had the missing note decided to set off on its own? Without thinking, they moved cautiously ahead, following the glittering trail, not yet knowing what awaited them on the other side of the forest thicket....
