Goldilocks and forest scouting

The night in the Wilderness was dark and full of whispers. Kuba and Jagna hid behind an old oak tree, peering surreptitiously at the border of the wilderness. Their village, Topolany, lay just outside the forest, about which the elders told extraordinary stories - of mermaids dancing on the moss, of ghouls singing under the moon, and of Zolotokopyt, the unicorn hiding in the densest backwoods.
That evening, the parents stayed longer at Auntie Oak's house while Grandpa watched over the kitchen. It was a chance the children had been waiting for for months. Kuba, armed with a torch and a bag of breadsticks, whispered:
- Let's go now, before the moon sets behind the pines!
Jagna followed her brother, clutching a piece of red yarn in her hand - if they get lost, it will leave a trail.
For the first few moments, everything seemed quiet and somewhat spooky. Only an owl hooted overhead. As they went deeper, they heard rustling under the leaves. Cuba trembled, but his sister put her arm around his shoulder:
- Maybe it's just a hedgehog. Or... a forest spirit?
Suddenly something golden flashed in front of them. A shadow flitted between the ferns - swift and slender. Jagna stopped, stunned with delight.
- Did you see it? - she whispered. - It was him! The goldfinch!
Before they had time to confer about what to do next, a quiet laughter sounded, like bells hidden in the morning mist. The trees began to whisper to each other louder and louder. Cuba bent down to peep through the thicket when something unexpectedly grabbed his arm - someone's tiny hand, cold as a stream in the middle of winter.
Cuba's heart beat harder. A figure with green eyes and hair tangled with leaves emerged from the shadows of the ferns. She moved towards them slowly, with a smile on her lips.
- 'We've been waiting for you, Topolan children,' she said quietly, and all around them smelt of mint and campfire smoke.
Kuba and Jagna stood as if enchanted. Then the clatter of golden hooves sounded, and a shadow larger than the oak by the inn emerged from the darkness. What will happen now? - they asked themselves in their minds. Their adventure in the Wilderness was just beginning....
