Green Hills of the Dryads

Amelia and Philip lived on the edge of a large, ancient forest that had always fascinated the children of their village. But no one dared to venture deep between the shadows of the tall oaks, where rumours told of wild animals, giant spiders and enchanted plants. One summer afternoon, they could no longer resist curiosity - the forest tempted them with its green hills, from the top of which, it was said, the whole world could be seen.
Amelia grabbed Philip's hand and they set off stealthily through the tall grass, stepping around the overgrown stones as if afraid they would touch them themselves. When they reached the hill, they felt the warm wind on their cheeks and the skylights danced around them. Suddenly they heard quiet laughter coming from behind an old oak tree.
- Who's there? - Philip asked quietly.
From behind the trunk emerged a girl with hair as green as young leaves. Her dress was woven with flowers and thin twigs twirled around her feet.
- 'I am Lira, the driad of these hills,' she whispered, smiling mysteriously. - Not many come here. I have been waiting for you.
Philip looked at Amelia questioningly, but before they could say anything, Lira led them by the hand between the trees. They walked deeper and deeper until they came across the trunk of an old apple tree. A door shone within it, as if woven from silver and moonlight.
- 'Only once a year can they be opened, when the moon is full and the wind carries the scent of new adventures,' said Lira, and her eyes lit up with a green glow. - Are you all ready?
Amelia felt a thrill of excitement on the back of her neck. She took a step towards the door, hearing Philip's heartbeat beside her. They didn't know what they would find on the other side, but one thing was certain. This day would change their lives forever....
Lira raised her hand and touched the silver door, and it began to slowly open, flooding the clearing with a strange golden light. The children looked at each other and, holding their breath, took the first step inside.
