Heart in the Clouds

Heart in the Clouds
Maks liked to look into places where no one else was looking for adventure. He lived on the fifth floor of an old tenement building, where the stairwell smelled of dust and the stairs creaked like an old door. There, at the very top, was an inconspicuous ladder leading to the roof - a place he thought only he had access to. One cloudy afternoon, when his heart was buzzing with strange feelings, he decided to climb up there with his notebook and crayons. He sat down by the low chimney and watched the clouds dancing across the sky. He tried to draw how he felt, but instead of a face, tangles of lines appeared on the paper, as if locked inside a whirlwind. He felt a slight pressure in his stomach. - Do you run away here too when things are too difficult? - spoke a voice behind his back. Maks jumped up. There stood a girl with long hair braided into a crazy braid. She was holding binoculars and a yellow notebook. - I am Zosia. - She smiled slightly. - I hide here when I have a storm in my head. You too? Maks didn't answer anything, just nodded. Zosia sat down next to him, and for a while neither of them spoke. Only the wind hummed in the aerials. - Do you want to see something unusual? - Zosia suddenly asked and without waiting for an answer handed him the binoculars. When Max put it to his eyes, he saw small coloured flags on the roofs of the neighbouring houses, as if someone had created a secret sign. Zosia whispered: - Just not everyone knows how to find them. This is the Cloud Club. We meet here to talk about things adults don't understand: fear, joy, anger.... even tears. Maks felt his heart start to beat faster - but it felt good, a bit like a morning jump into cold water. Zosia stood up, spread out her arms and looked up at the sky. - We're about to start. Today only, the Cloud Club is waiting for new courage. Ready? Suddenly, someone's footsteps echoed from below. Someone was climbing the ladder to the roof. They both held their breath and looked after each other with wide-open eyes.
