The storm roared over the fjord, the sea roiled under the dark blue sky and the waves hit the rocks with a bang. In the village of Nordheim, all the Vikings took shelter in the long house, but three children slipped outside. Lief, the older brother with a storm of red hair, walked in the lead. Astrid, his sister, whose eyes were as sharp as a falcon's, walked right behind him, and the youngest Gunn ran behind, tripping over his own feet. - 'Lief, if Mum finds out, she'll tear us apart like a bear! - whispered Astrid, covering her face with her hood. - 'She'd better not find out,' threw Lief over his shoulder. - 'Did you hear that bang in the night? It wasn't just a storm... The children reached a small cliff, which was usually too dangerous to climb. Gunn tripped over something hard sticking out of the sand. When he bent down, he saw a footprint - the engraved ancient runes of jarl Sigurd, Nordheim's greatest warrior of many years ago. - Look at that! - he exclaimed. Astrid was already wiping the stone from the sand with her sleeve. The drawings and signs began to shine with a thin blue light that glowed stronger and stronger. Lief grabbed his brother and sister by the shoulders. - This is a runestone! - He whispered with delight. - This must have been left by Jarl Sigurd before he was lost at sea! Perhaps it leads to his treasure, or.... He did not have time to finish, for suddenly they heard quiet rustling somewhere in the bushes. Someone was watching them. The stone flared more strongly and lightning cut through the sky, illuminating a narrow path leading deep into the forest that had never been here before.
