Mrs Malwina's secret shelf

Janek struggled to hold back a yawn as his mum once again stopped in front of the shop window of the old bookshop. Meanwhile, his younger sister, Ania, was carrying a book about dragons under her arm and looking at the funny titles on the shelves with fascination. The interior of Mrs Malwina's bookshop was always a little different from everyone else's - it smelled of cocoa and wood, and you could hear the quiet chirping of the owner in the back room.
This time, however, something had changed. While his mum was talking to Mrs Malvina, Janek noticed a tall, dark shelf in the corner that he hadn't seen before. Books sat on it, their titles flickering, as if they changed every time someone blinked an eye.
- 'See here, Anne,' he whispered in a conspiratorial tone, 'this shelf looks as if it's.... enchanted.
Anne approached curiously and stretched her hand towards a book bound in green cloth. The moment she touched the spine, the whole room lit up with a soft light for a second. The title of the book appeared clearly: "The Story That Wasn't There".
Janek felt his heart begin to beat faster. Suddenly, he noticed that the shelf shifted slightly, revealing a secret passage behind the row of books. At the same time, at the other end of the bookshop, the door slammed with a bang and Mrs Malwina looked at the siblings a little more seriously than usual.
- Just be careful, children,' she said quietly. - Not every story should be opened...
Janek and Anya looked at each other with concern. A whisper of wind shifted between the spines of the books, and a barely audible, mysterious laugh came from behind the shelf. Without a word they took a step towards the hidden passage....
