Professor Mistake's disappearing socks

In a certain unusual house at the end of Kociej Street lived Professor Pomyłka - an inventor-excentric known throughout the town. His house resembled a mad scientist's laboratory: strange machines stood everywhere, cobwebs of cables hung from the ceiling and different coloured light bulbs flashed in the corners.
One day Olive and Timothy, siblings from the neighbourhood, were invited by the professor to tea with jelly biscuits. Already at the entrance they tripped over a mechanical cat that meowed in Japanese, and in the kitchen they were greeted by a self-opening fridge to the rhythm of a disco song.
Professor Mistake led them into the laundry room with a broad smile, twirling a moustache covered in paint from a failed experiment. - 'Dear young friends,' he began in a solemn voice, 'you must help me solve the strangest puzzle of my life!
- It's about... disappearing socks! - he exclaimed dramatically, pointing to a huge pile of lonely socks lying on the floor.
- 'But everyone's socks go missing in the wash,' Olive pointed out.
- There is something much more serious going on here! - whispered the professor. - Yesterday I threw seven pairs into the washing machine, and all I got out was.... one crocodile, three right socks and a piece of a treasure map.
Olive looked around the laundry room. She noticed that there were strange marks glistening under the washing machine, as if someone (or something) had dragged the wet socks from there.
- Tymek, look! - she called out, kneeling down by the washing machine. The boy immediately looked underneath, and the professor pulled a cucumber-shaped torch from behind his ear and shone the light into the dark crevice underneath the machine.
At that moment, a quiet grunting sounded from the washing machine, and a small, moustache-covered creature with striped socks on its paws stepped out from under the drum.
The children and the professor held their breath... What is this bizarre creature? Has it been stealing the socks of everyone in the neighbourhood for years?
