Secret of Room 204
Lena came to school with a new notebook and courage. The corridor smelled of paint and the floor creaked like an old bridge. On the door of Room 204 hung a crooked metal plaque. Mrs Nowak said it was just a number, not a fortune teller. Lena looked around the classroom and sat down in the second bench. The clock above the blackboard had new batteries, but it ticked strangely slow.
The first lesson was maths, and the bell was silent. Mrs Nowak shrugged her shoulders and started the tasks about fractions. Lena wrote down the headings, but the chalk left marks as if they were glowing. The wind could not blow; the windows were closed on the handles. Yet a roll of the evacuation plan moved on the windowsill. Lena felt a shudder, but pretended it was nothing important.
After the break, she went back to Room 204 to get her forgotten pencil case. The door stood half-open, and there was pollen floating inside. A short line had drawn itself on the blackboard. - Hello? - She asked, keeping her hand on her backpack. The chalk lay, but after a moment it began to glide across the blackness. The letters formed a sentence: open the cupboard under the clock. Lena slowly approached the narrow cabinet with the scratched door. The metal trembled and a short, distinct knock came from inside. The clock above the board jumped back a minute and stopped again. The cabinet knob slowly began to unscrew, as if someone was turning it from inside. A single bell rang from the corridor, which only Lena could hear.
