Until yesterday, Zuzia Borkowska was an ordinary sixth-grade student. She lived on the third floor of a grey block of flats on Wierzbowa Street. She liked reading comic books, playing football and, on rainy days, watching the drops on the windowpane and imagining that each one had a different story. But that morning, when she got up and stood in front of the mirror, she felt that something was different. The number 8 school she went to was like any other. Two old chestnut trees grew in the courtyard and you could never find your own trainers in the cloakroom. However, this year something was happening that no previous year had experienced. Several pupils started to behave... incredibly. For example, Nina from Zuzi's class was able to predict the teachers' answers before the questions were even asked. Bartek was able to jump twice as high as the others, and Filip keeps his baseball cap on all day long, because, he says, it prevents him from reading his classmates' minds. Zuzia felt she didn't fit in with this unusual group. Until yesterday, she didn't believe that she herself could possess something amazing. But something strange happened on the way to school. When she tried to pick up a lost ball from under the fence, her hand - for a moment - became as transparent as glass. It was only the blink of an eye. Maybe she had been fooled... That day, the class teacher, Ms Ewa, invited the whole class to the gymnasium. There, a group of pupils from other classes, chosen by the strangely smiling headmaster Sobieraj, was already waiting. Zuzia saw Nina, Bartek, Filip and several of the older ones. The headmaster spoke in a loud voice: - Welcome, chosen ones! Today we are starting something our school has never seen before. Each of you is unique. Your... extraordinary abilities can make us create something really great together. But before we go any further... - here the headmaster suspends his voice - you must pass the first test. In the middle of the room there was a big metal box. Ms Eva handed out a wristband with flashing LEDs to everyone and instructed them to put it on their heads. Everyone whispered among themselves, some patted each other on the shoulders for encouragement. Susie felt her heart start to beat faster. - 'Only those who are able to use their powers will pass through the door that is about to open,' the headmaster added and looked at Zuzia. - This will be the beginning of your greatest adventure. Just then, the wall opposite the box swung open, revealing a mysterious, dark corridor full of flickering lights. Susie clutched her headband and took the first step towards the passage, feeling her hand slowly disappear....
