The Master Clock of the Gnomes

The forest by the Old Escarpment seemed ordinary only from a distance. Kaja had always heard from her grandfather not to venture beyond the birch trees. But on this afternoon, the sun was shining exceptionally brightly, and her younger brother, Filip, just couldn't sit still. They were hiding behind tree trunks, making up their own spells and flicking leaves on the forest stream, until suddenly Philip spotted something shiny right next to a fallen tree.
Hidden under the moss was a small, gilded clock. Its hands were spinning in reverse and the dial had strange symbols written on it instead of hours: a cloud, a moon, a leaf and a disappearing bird.
- Maybe someone left it here on purpose? - whispered Kaja, touching the cool metal. Filip reached out his hand, but at the same moment the clock chimed softly, as if warning of something unusual.
Suddenly, a quiet giggle came from the nearby bushes. Kaja squeezed the clock tighter and turned around. Among the ferns, a tiny silhouette appeared - a gnome with a long blue beard, threaded with silver.
- 'Now that you've found the Clock of the Gnome Master, you must stand trial! - he said in a thin voice. - But remember that the clues choose only those who have the courage to believe in the impossible.
The gnome pointed at the clock, which now shone with a bright light. Coloured sparks began to float around the children, and the forest landscape rippled like a reflection in the water. Three paths appeared in front of them: one led into the mist, another turned towards huge mushrooms, the third disappeared underground.
Kaja and Philip exchanged glances. They had no idea which path was the right one, but one thing was certain - they could not go back. Only would they dare take a path they hadn't even dreamed of yet?
