The Riddle of the Quartz Station

The Riddle of the Quartz Station
Maja patched up her silver jumpsuit and looked out of the panoramic window at the swirling clouds of Neptune below them. Her younger brother, Tymek, was clutching a language translation device they had built themselves from their dad's old tablet and a few parts from the school lab's junkyard. They were standing inside the Quartz Station - a huge research vessel that had been abandoned for years, and which by some miracle was still orbiting the blue planet. Each time they walked through a succession of corridors, their footsteps echoed, as if the station did not want its existence to be forgotten. "Did you see that?" whispered Tymek when the door to the lab opened by itself, even though they hadn't touched it. Maja nodded her head. Her heart beat faster with each passing moment. Blue and green lights flashed on the walls in strange, repeating patterns. Suddenly, there was a noise, as if someone - or something - was trying to start the station's main computer. A hologram of a spinning crystal appeared in the air, and a mysterious voice spoke in a language the siblings did not know. Tymek quickly put his translator to the pulsating console. Suddenly, all the doors slammed shut. An alarm signal came from the speakers and the lights began to pulsate even faster. A message scrolled across the hologram: "Mission initiated. Time: 15 minutes." Maja grabbed Tymek's hand. "What does that mean? What has started?" she asked, looking at her brother with concern. At that moment, a mysterious panel with three buttons slid out from the floor and an unknown code appeared on the screen. The children knew that if they did not solve the riddle in time, they might never leave Quartz Station again....
