The Riddle of the Whispering Drawer

The Riddle of the Whispering Drawer
School finished exceptionally early that day, and Lena couldn't wait to get to her grandmother's house. Outside the window it was raining, leaves danced in the wind and the air was full of the smell of wet grass. Grandma lived in a big old house full of nooks and crannies and creaking floors. It was the perfect place for interesting adventures - especially on rainy afternoons. When Lena entered the living room, an old oak chest of drawers standing under the window caught her eye. It was faded in colour and had metal handles in the shape of lions. The girl walked closer and touched one of the drawers. Then she heard something very strange: - Hey! Watch out for the varnish! - hissed a tinny voice. Lena jumped all the way back. She looked around, but no one was there. She slowly opened the drawer. Inside lay various trinkets: an old watch, a pen, a worn notebook and a few coins. Suddenly all the objects started to move, as if they had come to life! - Who came in here! - cried the watch, waving its hands. - 'I think it's the girl Granny was talking about,' whispered the pen, bent like a crazy snake. - Leave us alone! - cried the notebook, bouncing in place. Lena stood stunned, but after a moment she plucked up her courage. - Are... Are you guys really talking? - she asked uncertainly. The watch looked at her with seriousness. - Of course! But only when it's raining and someone brave enough to open our drawer. The girl sank to her knees and looked at the strange inhabitants of the drawer for a moment. Each had its own personality. The pen was grouchy, the notebook was very shy and the watch liked to show off. When Lena started talking to the objects, she felt as if she had found new friends. - Could you help us? - asked the notebook suddenly, opening to a random page. - 'We're looking for a very important thing, but we can't find it ourselves...' - he added in a whisper. Lena felt excitement and slight trepidation at the same time. What was it that the talking objects had lost? And why could they only talk in the rain? Suddenly, the wooden chest of drawers began to shake slightly, as if something was trying to get out of the deepest drawer at the very bottom. Lena hesitated for a moment, and then a soft, dragging voice emerged from the darkness - the kind she had never heard before....
