Through the Door Under the Stairs

Basia stared at a small key that glinted among the cobwebs under the lowest step of the stairs. She had found it by chance when she was looking for her old ping-pong ball. She couldn't take her eyes off it - it was decorated with tiny stars and had a strange dark blue stone at the end. She called out to Jas, her little brother, who immediately ran over curious to see what was going on.
- Look what I found! - she showed the key.
- Maybe it fits in some locker? - Johny was already kneeling by the stairs to see if he could find anything unusual. After a while, he noticed a small, barely visible flap. Basia felt her heart beating faster. They slid the key into the lock - it fit perfectly.
With a quiet click, the door opened and a soft purple glow flowed from behind it. They got down on their knees and looked inside. Inside, they could see something that resembled... a foggy corridor. It smelled like a summer storm in there: fresh, a bit like rain and something they couldn't name.
- You first - whispered Basia, but Jas shook his head. They whispered for a while longer, until finally they slipped inside together.
Instead of finding themselves on the other side of the wall, they fell onto a soft, shiny carpet of leaves. The corridor led on and on, and the walls pulsed with led light. They heard quiet giggles in the distance and something creeping among the shadows.
Suddenly, a small blue creature with big eyes and ears like fans appeared in their path. She was wearing a cubicle made of leaves, and in her hands she held something resembling a watch, but with three hands and a spinning dial.
- What are you? - Basia asked, clasping her hand on the key.
Instead of answering, the creature winked at them and pointed to a branching path: one led through translucent crystal trees, the other towards shimmering waterfalls from which colourful bubbles floated.
Basia and Johnny looked after each other with wide-open eyes. They knew they had to decide which way to go. Behind their backs, the door slowly began to close and for a moment they could both hear their own hearts beating before they moved forward....
