Unusual Day at the House Under the Lemon Tree

Unusual Day at the House Under the Lemon Tree
Maks thought their townhouse on Lemon Street was the most ordinary place in the world. There was the old wooden staircase, creaking like a ship's sails during a storm, a courtyard where magpies always hid something, and neighbours who repeated the same rituals every day: Mr Grzegorz watered the geraniums, Mrs Irena solved crosswords, and Mrs Wołkowska walked the cat on a leash (because the cat, she said, really liked walks). That morning, however, everything changed. When Maks went down to the kitchen, there was a smell not only of toast, but also of something unusual - as if a summer storm and freshly cut grass at the same time. Lena, his younger sister, sat in front of the window and stared at the swirling crumbs of light that appeared out of nowhere. In the afternoon, Lena whispered: - Do you think others see what we see too? Maks shrugged his shoulders, but felt a slight shiver throughout the day. He began to observe everything around him more carefully: the rustling of the leaves in the yard, the humming of the pipes under the bathroom, and even the smells in the stairwell, which began to remind him of things he used to dream. After dinner, Lena insisted they return to the kitchen. This time the lemon lay in the same place, but the lights around it danced even more boldly. Suddenly, they heard a quiet knocking from the side of the cupboard under the sink. Max was gripped by an unusual premonition. They approached without a word, and as they crouched by the cupboard, they noticed a slight crack - so small that they had not seen it at all before. A warm, honey-coloured light was emanating from inside. Lena squeezed her brother's hands. - 'Let's open it,' she whispered with an emotion that Maks had never heard in her voice before. Their fingers trembled as they reached towards the tilted cupboard. And then...
