Vault of Underground Voices

One stormy evening, Basia was lying on the floor in her room and putting together a jigsaw puzzle. The rain was drumming against the roof and the wind was whistling through the old windows. Suddenly, one of the puzzles rolled under the bed. Basia slipped her hand in but didn't feel it, so she turned on the torch and looked deeper. To her surprise, she discovered that one of the floorboards was gently standing out. With her fingernail she undermined the edge and.... plank slid soundlessly away, revealing a dark opening.
The girl's heart beat faster. Basia was curious, sometimes even daring. She moved the bed, pushed back the rug and looked inside. There was a small compartment under the floor, and something glinted in it. Basia leaned over and saw an old box, a colourful casket, a strange watch and a porcelain cup. There was a quiet giggle as she reached out for the casket.
- Hey! Watch your fingers! - hissed something in a thin voice. Basia jumped all the way up, banging her head against the bed frame.
- Who's here? - She asked in a whisper, looking wide-eyed.
- There's no one here! - another, thicker voice spoke up.
- You always spoil the fun! - the violet casket jumped up gently.
Basia withdrew her hand, but was amazed to see that the casket opened its lid like a face, the teacup lifted its ear like a hand, and the watch giggled and shook its mechanism.
- 'Don't be afraid, it's just been a long time since we've seen anyone outside the vault,' said the teacup in a beaming tone.
The girl blinked, unsure if she was dreaming it all. But when the casket spoke again: - Can you help us? - Basia realised that this was only the beginning of something extraordinary.
As she reached deeper, she heard a chorus of strange voices, and from behind the darkness of the casket, something sparkled and began to move....
