Zuzi's Enchanted Pencils

Zuzi's Enchanted Pencils
Zuzia lived in a tall brick block of flats on the edge of town. Outside her window stretched a small courtyard with a clapperboard, three benches and a tiny flower garden where sparrows always buzzed. Zuzia was ten years old, with red hair and a notebook full of drawings. She drew every day, always on the same windowsill, overlooking the downy lavender and orange swinging string. One rainy afternoon, during which the world outside the window was grey and fuzzy, Mum handed Susie a new wooden casket. It was very old and had a tiny lock in the shape of a leaf. - 'This is for you, darling,' said Mum, handing her the casket. - Your great-grandmother kept important things in it. Why don't you hide your favourite pencils in here? Susie opened the casket. Inside lay a set of six coloured pencils, each in a different colour: blue, lime green, fiery red, sunny yellow, purple and chocolate brown. They had small symbols engraved on them - a star, a leaf, a cloud, a flame, a drop and the moon. That evening, instead of settling down to sleep, Susie sat on the windowsill and took out a blue pencil. She decided to draw something to cheer up the grey landscape outside the window. A long, meandering river began to grow out of the blank page in her notebook, and houses and trees appeared on its banks. As she finished drawing a crazy duck with a pom-pom hat, she heard a soft rustling. She held her breath. She looked down at her notebook. The duck turned its head and patted itself on the forehead with its wing, then... began to drag itself along as if it were real! And then slowly, first with one finger, then with its whole paw, it slid out of the page onto the windowsill. Susie was stunned by the sensation. The duck looked around and smiled at Zuzia with a wide, amused beak. After a moment, it waddled up to the edge of the notebook and a pom-pom fell from its cap. Susie quickly reached for a lime green pencil and drew grass. At the same moment, soft blades sprouted on the window sill; the duck happily jumped between them and began to cluck merrily. Susie's heart pounded like a hammer. Was it possible that pencils could bring drawings to life? She decided to try out another colour. She reached for a red pencil and very carefully drew a tiny figure of a boy with glasses and a huge backpack. In the same second that she finished the last line, the boy in the drawing fluttered his eyelids, corrected his glasses and slowly started to walk off the page.... At that moment, a quiet knocking sounded in the room. Susie turned around frightened - someone was standing at the door of her room. She heard a quiet voice: - Susie, can I come in? And on the windowsill, right next to the duck's cap, a boy had just slipped off a page onto the living grass. Susie looked at her enchanted pencils and felt a thrill of excitement. What was going to happen now?
